A masked gang of men armed with knives set fire to a restaurant last night forcing diners to "run for their lives".

A group of men rushed into Monak in West London at about 10.30pm where they threatened staff with knives and then set the place on fire.

Metropolitan Police raced to the scene, but then a group of men escaped and are still at large. No arrests have been made.

A video shared online showed orange flames coming from the front of the popular pan-Asia and sushi restaurant.

The restaurant shared a statement today thanking emergency services and staff while apologising to customers who were forced to flee the blaze.

A witness told MyLondon how the attack was "almost military-style" as the assailants were wearing "masks and balaclavas" and described how diners fled for their lives.

They said: "There were some people with masks and balaclavas, it was almost military style.

"I did speak to some of the diners. A woman said it was something to do with gasoline. Another said the fire almost got to his feet but he got out.

"They looked shocked, bewildered, and stressed. Some didn't want to say anything. Whether that was out of shock or fear, I don't know."

They said they phone police and firefighters after coming home and seeing the restaurant in flames.

He said: "I was in my home around half-ten last night. I heard a noise and people started running down the street. I saw people clearly screaming so something was going on. I thought it was teenagers having a Friday night brawl. Then I saw flames in the restaurant."

"We are grateful for the efforts of the firefighters and the community for their support.

"We wanted to take a moment to address our customers who were present during the fire. We are sorry that you had to witness this traumatic event, but we are grateful for your safety and cooperation during the evacuation.
