"To work with that cast and that crew - just a phenomenal bunch. It's been a joy really that I don't think will ever come around again in my career," said the 42-year-old comedian.

Taking on Nate, the star has been allowed to tap into a darker side as the character's development led him down the path to becoming a villain.

Nick himself is better known for his comedy chops and character Mr Swallow, leading him to bond with leading man Jason.

Nick said: "Jason's a huge magic fan and I started off with magic, he's not only a magic fan but a great hobbyist magician. Particularly on Season One, he would always have a deck of cards out with him so we're just regularly jamming and doing tricks for each other.

"He's seen me do Mr Swallow stuff and magic stuff so that has been a real thrill."

The comedian's card tricks are stuff of legend as he memorised an entire mixed deck and repeated it in order during an episode of 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown, which has since gone viral.

While Jason and Nick shared their love of magic behind the scenes, the 42-year-old confessed he wasn't always the most professional when cameras were rolling.

"Goodness, Hannah Waddingham makes me corpse all the time but we rarely have scenes together," laughed Nick.

"In fact, we have hardly any scenes together this season and really think it might be deliberate because it would take so long to film."

Emmy winning actress Hannah portrays Ted Lasso's love interest and new owner of AFC Richmond, Rebecca Welton. She is best known for her roles as the "shame nun" in Game of Thrones and Jackson's mum in Sex Education.

Nick said: "There's just something about her. It would never be necessarily the scene that's making us go, even though the scenes obviously inherently funny.

"It's just something about her, she's got a twinkle behind her eyes that looks like she's about to burst out laughing and I don't know we kind of fed off each other in a way that always made the other go."

"She's brilliant," he warmly added before giving fans a warning for the end of the season, teasing "I can't really talk about it".

He said: "The way this season ends was incredibly emotional. We filmed some of the last scenes on that last day of filming and it was a really emotional day."

The comedian is embarking on a solo tour as Mr Swallow, called The Very Best & Worst of Mr. Swallow, while season three of Ted Lasso airs on Apple TV.

Nick added: "If this is the last Ted Lasso, who knows - I don't know at all! But if it is, then it's just been an absolute joy and an experience I'll never forget."
