I'm A Celeb fans cringe over Paul Burrell's over-acting and royal name dropping

I’m A Celebrity... South Africa only kicked off last night, but already Paul Burrell has left viewers cringing.

The former royal butler was called out for named dropping Princess Diana and the Queen just minutes into the ITV show.

Ahead of arriving in camp, he said in his interview: “Most people will know me for being a footman to Her Majesty and butler to Diana, Princess of Wales.”

Others blasted his ‘fake’ over-acting when it came to reliving a trial he did when he last appeared on the show in 2004.

Paul’s face was a picture as he was told he would be doing the hell hole trial again, which saw him put his hand in different holes with all manner of nasties behind them.

Viewers then watched as the 64-year-old broke down in tears and screamed as he was ‘bitten by a snake’ during the Trees of Torment trial.

But fellow contestant Shaun Ryder wasn’t so sympathetic as he suffered a real snake bite during his stint on I’m A Celeb in 2010.

Although Paul managed to get the key, his ordeal was not over yet as he had to reach into another hell hole - this time filled with cockroaches.

“This is a world away from Windsor Castle,” he complained.

Happy Mondays star Shaun joked: "I'm sure there were a lot of cockroaches there, Paul."

Taking to Twitter after the challenge, one fan wrote: “I don’t know what was funnier, Paul’s scream or his face.”

“Paul Burrell is a drama queen. Over-acting attention seeker,” another commented.

A third chimed in: “Paul Burrell faking these overreactions to recreate the original trial is already pushing me over the edge. Completely lacking in authenticity and believability.”

Posting a photo of dozens of booze bottles, a viewer poked fun at Paul’s royal mentions saying: “Getting ready for the ‘take a drink every time Paul Burrell mentions Diana and he was her rock.”

“It took less than 10 seconds for Paul Burrell to namedrop the Queen and Princess Diana,” another said.

“Not like Paul Burrell to mention Princess Diana #ImACeleb,” one more fan tweeted.

Ahead of his second appearance on the show, Paul said things would be ‘different’ this time round as he is a ‘different person now’.

He explained: “I went into the jungle as Princess Diana’s former butler and I came out as Paul Burrell. From that point onwards, I realised I had to be me.

“I was a married guy with two kids, and now 19 years on, I am a married man again – but this time around, I have a husband.

“I have many more things to talk about in South Africa. This time I want to be there for all the dads who are struggling with their sexuality.”
