A couple who moved into a new house as they prepared to expand their family have had an eight-month nightmare after they say the house has become full of damp and mould.

Josh Bullivant moved into a new house in the Southcoates area of Hull last August with his fiancee, who is heavily pregnant. He claims the condition of the house gradually got worse and says that now the walls are so damp they “crumble” away at the touch and there is also a hole in the ceiling, reports Hull Live.

Josh claims he has tried to contact his estate agency, Lovelle, multiple times to try to get someone to come to the house to repair the issues but no-one has come.

Lovelle planned to send someone to the house as a “goodwill gesture” in December but they later revoked this because they said Josh was “verbally abusive” to a member of staff; however Josh claims he only made a comment “in the heat of the moment”. The agency have said the damp issue was 'dealt with swiftly' after receiving the complaint.

He felt: “I think it’s absolutely atrocious and the fact that I’m paying money to live somewhere and nothing’s being done about it is just not right. They’ve not even tried to get in touch or make arrangements with us to try to get it done. It’s made me feel really bad.

“We were expanding our family so we thought we needed a house because at the time we were living in a one bedroom flat so we thought we needed to expand. We got this house because it looked really nice but the photos are deceiving and down the line it got worse and worse like you touch the walls and it crumbles away.”

Speaking about his fiancee, Josh added: “It’s put her into like a pit of depression. She loved the house at first and then it went downhill and she just stopped caring about the house.”

The couple moved into the house on August 10, 2022 and as they went about their days normally, they saw mould starting to appear. Josh claims he called and emailed Lovelle multiple times but he was “ignored”.

He also claimed he reported the agency to an environmental health team who told him they were writing up a notice giving Lovelle eight weeks to come and do the repairs but this time period had passed and no one had been in touch, according to Josh. He also claimed that eventually the estate agency were due to send someone to the house in December to cover up the mould on the wall but no one came.

Josh explained: “They said they would send someone round to paint the wall to cover it up and then no one turned up so I rang. We both waited all day for this person to come and in the heat of the moment I said it was a p*** take that you’ve not done anything.

“The person who manages this house was away at the time on annual leave. He (later) sent an email to say they were going to send their handyman round as a goodwill gesture but now that goodwill gesture has been revoked.”

Josh said there is damp and mould from the front bedroom all the way down to the living room, a “massive hole” in the ceiling in the front bedroom and the wall is starting to “corrode and fall apart”. He claims he and his fiancee have been “coughing our guts out and feeling really poorly”.

Since December, Josh claims not to have had any further communication with his estate agent and his landlord is also refusing to help with the repairs, allegedly. The issues became so bad that Josh said he and his fiancee moved into a new house on Thursday, April 20.

He added: “It’s made us feel absolutely rubbish because of the way we’re being treated. I want to put the word out there to get something done about it because I don’t want anyone else going through the same situation we’ve been going through.”

A spokesperson for Lovelle said: "When the tenant first reported a potential damp issue, this was dealt with swiftly and recommendations about better airing and ventilation were provided, based on the expert opinion of tradespeople."
