Ryan Reynolds tasked with maintaining 35-year record after Wrexham title win
Following their promotion from the National League, Wrexham will now be responsible for maintaing a 35-year record.
A comeback win over Boreham Wood on Saturday secured the title for the Red Dragons and their place in League Two next year. The club have been totally transformed since Ryan Reynolds and fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney took over in November 2020.
After agonisingly missing out on promotion to Stockport County last term, they have now finally returned to the fourth tier. In doing so, they now take ownership of protecting a record that has stood ever since automatic promotion from the National League was introduced.
The first season it was brought in was the 1986/1987 campaign, with no team who has been promoted ever relegated straight back down. In fact, of the 24 teams promoted between 2010 and 2021, only four have gone down.
One of those teams, Maccesfield suffered a financial meltdown, with York City, Barnet and Grimsby being the other three clubs in that group. It will now be up to Wrexham to ensure the long record does not come to an end.

They appear to be in a good position to extend it, having amassed a record points total for the National League. Phil Parkinson's side have just one game remaining before they become a League Two club, with Reynolds left overwhelmed with their achievements this term.

"This is exactly why. What is happening right now is why. Boreham Wood showed up today. They are an incredible team. This entire story, the reason why we are all on the edge of our seats is because Notts County are so damn good as well.
"They deserve to go up. That is something we feel quite strongly about. We are rooting for them. We want to see them go up and face them in League Two because they're incredible."
On Sunday morning, the Deadpool star added a message on Twitter, writing: "Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC."
They will have to wait until 13 May to see who will join them in League Two, with Notts County having qualified for the semi-finals. Meanwhile in the fourth tier, Leyton Orient have already won the title.
The other two automatic promotion spots are still being fought over, while Rochdale and Hartlepool have been all but relegated. Wrexham will now be keeping an eye on the promotion battle to see who they will have to fight to maintain their place in League Two.
