Two cheerleaders have been shot after accidentally getting in the wrong car after practice.

One of the young women, who was shot in her leg and back, was left fighting for her life.

The cheerleaders, all members of an elite cheerleading team, were on their way home from practice in Oak Ridge near Austin, Texas.

Heather Roth told ABC13 she had stepped out of her friend’s car and got into another thinking it was hers but there was a man sitting in the passenger seat.

She panicked thinking there was a stranger in her car and ran back to her friends car.

Then she noticed the man approaching her vehicle. She rolled down the window to apologise but the man pulled out a gun and allegedly started shooting.

An arrest affidavit stated that a witness saw the gunman "shoot at the vehicle multiple times" before fleeing.

Ms Roth suffered a minor wound and was treated at the scene but her teammate, Payton Washington, was shot in the leg and the back.

Ms Roth said: "Payton opens the door, and she starts throwing up blood.”

The severely injured victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

A fundraiser has been setup to help pay for her medical expenses.

Local police arrested the alleged gunman, 25-year-old Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr, Tuesday.

He has been charged with deadly conduct but additional charges are likely.

Police say they have obtained footage of the parking lot that captured the incident but have not released the video to the public.

The cheerleading team's head coach, Felecia Mulkey, said: "Payton is a strong young lady; if you know her, you know that about her. I have no doubt she's going to get through this.

This comes the same week where 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot in the arm and head after accidentally ringing at the wrong house when trying to pick up his younger twin brothers.

The teenager’s parents had asked him to pick up his siblings at an address on 115th Terrace, Kansas City. But the 16-year-old accidentally went to a home on 115th Street.

The teenager reportedly pulled into the driveway of the home on the night of April 13, rang the doorbell, and was immediately shot in the head by the resident.

The severely wounded boy ran to three different houses looking for help and was rushed to hospital.

In yet another incident this week, a woman looking for a friend's house in was after the car she was riding in mistakenly went to the wrong address and was met with gunfire in the driveway.

with three other people on Saturday night when the group made a wrong turn onto the property.

They were trying to turn the car around when the homeowner, Kevin Monahan, 65, came out onto his porch and , according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy.

One round hit Kaylin, killing her.
