A dog was taken to the vet with "horrific" stab wounds despite already being dead and bleeding in a B&M shopping bag.

The desperate pooch was brought to Oldbury's PDSA Pet Hospital in the West Midlands by a man claiming she had been hit by a car.

The animal, a female bull breed, suffered devastating wounds all over its body.

Among the grim injuries were deep knife wounds all over her head, body and legs.

She had also fractures to her ribs, skull and muzzle, and numerous areas of bruising including severe trauma to the abdomen resulting in the rupture of the intestines.

RSPCA Inspector Boris Lasserre, who is investigating said: "The photographs and x-rays are horrific and clearly show the ferocious and sustained attack this dog endured before his death. We are very keen to trace whoever did this and would like to identify the person who took him to the PDSA between 9am and 10am on March 29.

The man who brought the dog in arrived with a "blood-drenched sheet and a B&M shopping bag" before leaving the vets without giving his name or personal details, reported Birmingham Live.

The RSPCA believes the stricken animal was stabbed when it was alive but had died shortly before it was brought to the vets.

The charity appealed for information and was trying to trace the man. He was described as black and aged around 20 to 30. He wore black trousers, a black jacket, and a black cap.

Inspector Lasserre added: "We understand the man carried the dog into the clinic having arrived there on foot so we would be interested in hearing from anyone who was in the area at the time or from any drivers who have dash cam footage.

"We also appeal to anyone who may have heard a dog screaming in agony on the morning of the 29 March.

Dead dog carried into vets in B&M bag after suffering 'horrific stab wounds''The nature of the wounds show the horrific mutilation of the dog was not post-mortem,' the RSPCA said (RSPCA / SWNS)

"The nature of the wounds show the horrific mutilation of the dog was not post-mortem. Clearly this savage and prolonged attack led to the dog’s eventual death.

"It is very important anyone with information contacts us in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018. This poor dog would have suffered a great deal in this attack and we would like to find out who did this to her."
