Celebrities will be sent ‘into space’ as part of a new reality series that will see stars tested to their limits on a space station.

A string of celebrities will be dressed up as astronauts and tasked with living in conditions that would be comparable to life on another planet.

ITV are developing a show titled Stars In Mars which will see celebs testing their endurance by living in a space station designed to simulate life on the red planet.

And in a similar style to I’m A Celeb, the contestants will face off against each other in a string of gripping tasks - and will face public votes.

A TV insider told The Sun on Sunday: “This show is zany and different – audiences haven’t seen anything like it before. It will be a challenge and some will struggle with the conditions.

“The celebs will live, sleep and eat together – and those who don’t cut the mustard will get voted off.

“Talent bosses are currently floating ideas for a presenter and celebs to take part.”

The show is said to be in the pre-production stage of being made - and Britain’s Got Talent makers Thames TV are behind the new series.

A US version is already set to air this year - with Variety reporting last week that Star Trek actor William Shatner has been signed up to take part in the show.

Fox unscripted programming president Allison Wallach told Variety: “The moment I heard the pitch for Stars on Mars, I knew a show this bold, this big and this outlandish simply belonged on Fox.

“Watching celebrities take giant leaps out of their comfort zone and step into the unexpected will no doubt be truly transformational and comical.

“Throughout, we will learn a lot about these stars, and when you factor in William Shatner leading the charge from Mission Control, we have the makings of a show that’s ready for blast off.”

The UK version is expected to follow a similar format.

More details about the US version were shared, with a description declaring: “During their stay, [the contestants] will be faced with authentic conditions that simulate life on Mars, and they must use their brains and brawn – or maybe just their stellar social skills – to outlast the competition and claim the title of brightest star in the galaxy.

“The celebrities will compete in missions and will vote to eliminate one of their crewmates each week, sending them back to Earth.
