Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer has warned Manchester City that the Bundesliga giants have not given up on the Champions League.

Sommer’s wretched record against City continued when Bayern were beaten 3-0 at the Etihad last week - and he has now conceded a staggering 18 goals in just seven games against the Blues.

But the former Borussia Moenchengladbach stopper, who has stepped up at Bayern in the absence of injured No 1 Manuel Neuer, remains defiant ahead of the return in Munich. Sommer said: “Of course 3-0 looks a little bit too much - but we will try everything.

“We still believe and we will keep our heads up. We had some good opportunities in the first game and could have scored a few goals ourselves. We have to take something from that. The result was hard to take because it was a very tight game for most of the night.

“We know that City are good. The last time I played against a team as good as Manchester City was the last time I played against Manchester City! But we have to analyse our game really closely and find the points where we can do well - and always we believe.”

Bayern’s Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt was singing from the same hymn sheet as his goalkeeper. De Ligt said: “It is going to be difficult but we have to believe in ourselves and that we can do it.

“This is a game all about small details - that’s what makes the difference. We had some chances against them but didn’t take them and they've killed us with their goals. If you are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League you are good enough to win it. Any team can.”
