Four people have been killed in a huge car crash at the beginning of the Easter weekend.

The accident at around 6.45am on Friday morning after reports of a crash during heavy rain on the Barton Highway near Casuarina Lane at Jeir, near Murrumbateman in New South Wales.

It prompted a large emergency services response who were called in to cry passengers and drivers from the wreckage.

Some people were trapped in their cars as a result of the incident.

The highway has been closed in both directions since around 7am, with holiday traffic seen to quickly build up either side of the scene.

One survivor was rushed to hospital following the two-car collision and remains there fighting for their life.

Police were called to the Barton Highway following reports of a crash involving a Ford Range and a Mitsubishi Triton.

Paramedics and a rescue team and helicopter were called to the scene where they discovered people trapped in their cars as a result of the crash.

Officials have confirmed a 52-year-old woman and a 54-year-old male passenger, alongside two men in their 20s, all died at the scene.

A statement from NSW police confirms none of the victims of the fatal collision have been formally identified.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman said: "Two cars with multiple deceased is no doubt a scene that is horrific but ultimately our thoughts are with the family, friends and local community that will no doubt will feel the impact of these deaths."

A male passenger of the Ford, believed to be in his 20s, was treated at the scene and later taken to the hospital.

He is currently fighting for his life in a critical condition.

Survivors of the horrific crash had to be cut out from the wreckage by NSW Fire and Rescue after they were trapped in their vehicles.

Police have set up a crime scene as they launch an investigation into the crash.
