A former Metropolitan Police constable has been found guilty of raping a woman and admitted searching for her name in police records after the attack.

Ireland Murdock, who served in the force's Central North Basic Command Unit before he was sacked, faces jail after being convicted following a trial at Inner London Crown Court.

The 26-year-old will be sentenced at the same court on May 23.

Murdock raped the woman, whom he knew, on September 25, 2021 while off duty in Lambeth, south London.

Four months after the victim reported the rape in January 2022, Murdock searched her name on a police system and accessed a restricted crime report relating to her, without any good reason to do so, the force said.

Last May, he denied rape but pleaded guilty to a second charge of unauthorised access to computer material.

As a result of his conviction, Murdock was found guilty of gross misconduct at a police hearing two months later.

Murdock, of Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, was added to the barred list, meaning he cannot work for the police, local policing bodies (PCCs), or watchdog the IOPC.

Chief Superintendent Andy Carter, who is in charge of policing for the Central North Basic Command Unit where Murdock served until his dismissal, branded it an "absolutely atrocious offence".

He said today: "Murdock committed an absolutely atrocious offence, and caused his victim a lot of pain and fear. He betrayed everything we stand for and I am disgusted by his actions.

"I would like to thank the victim for her courage and bravery in coming forward. I would also like to thank those who investigated him for building such a strong case that led to him being found guilty.

"We took immediate action to suspend Murdock from duty when his offending came to light and we dismissed him at the earliest opportunity as soon as he pleaded guilty to unauthorised access to computer material.

"We are determined to have a Met that the public can trust, with officers that people feel confident to approach. When someone fails to meet these standards, we will take action to remove them from our organisation."

Mr Carter said the officer had been suspended as soon as the allegations were made against him.

Murdock has now been placed on the barred list held by the College of Policing, meaning he can never return to the service.
