Jamie Carragher has slammed Todd Boehly 's “ridiculous decision” to appoint Graham Potter in the first place following his sacking.

Chelsea announced the former Brighton manager’s shock exit on Sunday evening following the weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Potter was only appointed back in September after Boehly had made the first managerial change of his tenure by axing axing Thomas Tuchel.

Potter put pen to paper on a five-year contract in West London, with Chelsea paying out a huge compensation package to his former employers Brighton in the process. He failed to inspire an upturn in fortunes with the Blues though and has now paid with his job.

In reacting to Potter’s surprise exit, Carragher took to Twitter with a brutal assessment of Boehly nd criticised the American billionaire's ruthless approach to managers, whilst suggesting that he should never have moved Tuchel on.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Todd said he would be different to Roman [Abramovich],” alongside two laughing crying emojis.

“I feel for Graham Potter, but it was inevitable,” the Liverpool icon added. "You don’t change Tuchel for Potter. Ridiculous decision to start with.”

It is unclear over who will be taking the reins from Potter in the long-term, albeit former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has been installed as an immediate favourite. For the time being, former Brighton defender Bruno Saltor has been put in interim charge.

A statement from Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali regarding the decision to sack Potter read: “On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

“Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season. We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high.”

Chelsea are very quickly back in action in the Premier League following the decision to sack Potter. The Blues take on fellow strugglers Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening where they will be aiming to move back into the top-half of the standings.

Following that game, they then face a trip to the Black Country to take on Wolves, potentially with a new manager in situ.
