ASOS is one of the largest clothing brands on the planet. Every day tonnes of fashion lovers will snoop around on its website on the hunt for their new favourite items of clothing.

As you trawl through the seemingly endless pages of garments on the site or app, you might be left wondering what the name ASOS actually means.

Turns out you're not alone, as people have been left baffled after discovering what the letters in ASOS' name stand for.

It transpires that the letters don't relate to the founder's name - a common theme amongst other big brands - or a sentimental meaning, but something much simpler.

The four letters of ASOS actually stand for As Seen On Screen - which is a pretty good brand name if you think about it.

The company kicked off in 1999 selling unbranded clothing to celebrities from TV shows - so the idea was that ordinary people could end up wearing the clothes they had seen on TV.

From there, people started to refer to the company as As Seen On Screen and in 2000 that was what they officially became known as.

Now, as you trawl through the website on the search for clothes you might feel like a famous person from a movie or hit TV show.

ASOS is not the only company with a hidden meaning behind its simple four-letter name.

IKEA has recently revealed what its name refers to, with the first two letters referring to the name of its founder Ingvar Kamprad. While the last two letters refer to the name of a farm and a village that he grew up close to.
