Laura Woods in stitches as Ally McCoist left red-faced by his F1 mistake
Laura Woods couldn't stop laughing as Ally McCoist admitted to making an embarrassing mistake while watching the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The Scot expressed his disappointment over the apparent lack of a Formula 1 title race this year after watching TV coverage of the Jeddah action this weekend. But, as talkSPORT host Woods pointed out, he was very much late to the party as the race had taken place a week earlier.
"It's becoming a non-event the Grand Prix, isn't it?" McCoist said. "It was Saudi Arabia at the weekend and it was like watching a replay." Woods was soon laughing when she pointed out that was exactly what he had been watching.
The host replied: "That was two weeks ago," before she began giggling uncontrollably. Between her laughter, she managed to ask: "Were you getting into it, and were you watching the actual event as if it was live?"
And McCoist duly replied, before putting his hand on his face in embarrassment: "Aye, I swear to god I was. I thought to myself, 'That's brilliant, [Sergio] Perez has won two in a row'. I did.
Sebastian Vettel warns of looming F1 ban and is "very worried about the future""In my defence, I didn't watch it all, I watched about 25 minutes before I thought to myself, ''This is boring, this is going to be another one-two', which it duly turned out to be!"
Responding to a clip of the conversation which was posted on social media, Sky Sports F1 presenter Rachel Brookes took the opportunity to remind McCoist that there will actually be some live action coming up soon. "Aus GP this weekend and it's a whole new race," she joked.
The race in Melbourne may produce a similar outcome, though, with Red Bull a cut above the rest in terms of car performance. It was evidenced in Jeddah by the ease with which Max Verstappen cut through the field to finish second behind his team-mate Perez despite starting 15th on the grid.
A familiar face will also be returning to the F1 paddock, in the form of Daniel Ricciardo. He will be on duty in Melbourne, his home race, as reserve driver for Red Bull and will likely also be taking part in some marketing events.
