While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's move to North America appeared unprecedented, they were in fact the latest in a long line of royals who have crossed the pond.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to leave the UK for Canada and later went to California on their "freedom flight".

But other members of the Royal Family have either lived, worked or studied in the US.

One member of the clan who spent two years living in New York is Prince Harry's close cousin, Princess Eugenie, after she was offered a job working with an online auction house.

The royal returned to live in London in 2015 but has returned to the States a number of times over the years, including when she went to visit Harry and Meghan last year.

After moving out of her parents' home in Windsor, Princess Eugenie shared an apartment in St James's Palace with her elder sister, Princess Beatrice.

However, the royal also spent time living in New York after she was offered a job at online auction house Paddle8.

Despite the opportunity to live in a huge apartment in a central location, Eugenie opted to base herself downtown in the Meatpacking District.

According to Apartment Home Living, the average rental cost of a one-bedroom apartment in the trendy area will set you back approximately £6,000 per month.

A royal source at the time in 2013 told Us Weekly: "She enjoys walking to work every day."

A separate account confirmed this, telling the publication: "She loves New York!"

During her time in New York, Eugenie was often photographed going to Madison Square Garden, attending basketball games, sampling different restaurants, shopping and watching fashion shows.

Another royal couple who headed stateside for a while was Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor.

A successful actress, Sophie Winkleman married Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s son in 2009 and the pair moved over to California shortly after so that she could continue with her career.

During their time in the US, the couple welcomed their first daughter, Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor, at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre on August 15, 2013.

As the 53rd in line to the throne, Maud is named after several of her royal ancestors.

Her first name is after Queen Maud of Norway who was a daughter of King Edward VII and Elizabeth is in honour of the late Queen.

Her other middle name, Daphne, is after Sophie’s beloved grandmother and Marina was the name of Lord Frederick’s grandmother, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.

The couple later moved back to the UK and welcomed their second daughter, Isabella Alexandra May Windsor, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on January 16, 2016.

Sophie and Frederick sent their children to Thomas's School in Battersea, South West London - the same school where Prince George and Princess Charlotte started their education.

A handful of other royals also opted to spend part of their education in the US - such as Lady Gabriella Kingston who graduated from Brown University in 2004 with a BA degree in Comparative Literature and Hispanic studies.

Lady Gabriella would later go on to gain an MPhil degree in Social Anthropology from Linacre College, Oxford.

Elsewhere, Princess Alexandra’s grandson, Alexander Ogilvy, also graduated from Brown University and studied Computer Science and Economics.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he now works at a software development company in New York.
