A man accused of murdering his girlfriend's toddler described her to police as a "nutcase" and "accident prone", a court heard.

Kyle Bevan, 31, unleashed a "frenzied and extremely violent attack" on two-year-old Lola James at her family home in July 2020, the court heard.

Lola was found to have suffered 101 injuries and in the police interviews that followed Bevan claimed the family dog pushed her down the stairs of the home in Haverfordwest, it was said.

Bevan denies murder as mum Sinead James, 30, is also on trial accused of causing or allowing the death of her daughter. She denies the charge.

His interviews with police were read to a jury at Swansea Crown Court.

Bevan's interviews were read to the Swansea Crown Court heard where he is on trial accused of murder.

Bevan described Lola as “accident-prone”, WalesOnline reports.

He said: “She’s a nutcase, an idiot. We’re testing her for ADHD and autism, she’s got no fear man.

“She always falls and smacks her face or lacks awareness. It always happens to her and she’s too small like…

“She’s only two and she’s made of steel man. That bruise on her nose was healing very well, I have seen adults healing not so quickly, fair play to her like.”

Bevan was again asked to describe Lola.

He said: “Just, I don’t know, crazy, absolutely crazy. She’s a bundle of energy man. They’re testing her for ADHD and autism.”

When asked about her food, he said: “Ice lollies all the time, and breakfast, dinner and tea. Constantly ice lollies.”

The court heard that Bevan didn't call an ambulance for 30 minutes.

Bevan was asked why there was a half-hour delay in the ambulance being called.

He said: “I had to stop her chewing on her tongue, put her on the sofa, put her clothes on her and put the dog out…. I sat next to her and prayed really.”

The court heard how he filmed Lola while seriously injured and contacted his mum.

During a police interview that was played in court, an officer said: "You sent photographs to your mum saying 'She's flopping mam, she's never like that'. Your mam to you said: 'You need to get her to the hospital now' and to wake Sinead. Did you do any of the things your mam asked you to do?”

Bevan replied: "I couldn't ring the ambulance so I asked her to do it."

The trial continues.
