Marc Cucurella says he had to Google one of Chelsea's January signings

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has revealed that he did not previously know who British record transfer Enzo Fernandez was - and even had to Google him ahead of his January arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine completed a £106m move to West London in the closing hours of the January transfer window, with the Blues managing to seal a deal after protracted negotiations with his former club Benfica. Fernandez’s switch followed a highly-impressive World Cup from the midfielder where his performances helped Argentina to the title in Qatar.

Despite the huge outlay on his services, Cucurella has admitted that he did not who his new teammate was but was left impressed by his displays during the tournament. Speaking to ESPN’s Sports Centre, the Spanish defender said: “I liked to watch matches in which my friends were playing, so I was watching Argentina because of Alexis [MacAllister].

“I think I said, ‘I really like number 24, he’s very good!’ But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone! As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea!

“I told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbecue.

“He is very young, but he is very talented with the ball and he is intelligent. He’s still adapting but he’s already played some good games. We have [signed] a great midfielder.”

Fernandez has enjoyed a rapid start to life as a Chelsea player since his record-breaking mid-season switch. The 22-year-old already has two assists to his name in the Premier League after just seven appearances.

His standout moment was arguably a stunning assist for Kai Havertz in the Blues’ victory over Leicester at the King Power Stadium. He chipped the ball over the Foxes’ defence, with his German teammate then also lifting a brilliant effort over Danny Ward before the break.

In the aftermath of that victory, Graham Potter sent a warning that Fernandez was only going to improve as he further adapts to life in West London. He said: "He's a fantastic player, a young player.

“ I think he's going to get better and better when he's with us more. He's just arrived to a new country and a new league so you always have to adapt to that.

“You can see his quality, when he gets the ball he passes forward. He sees everything."

Fernandez will hope to earn more opportunities with Argentina over the international break. The reigning World champions take on Panama and Curacao in a pair of friendlies.
