Radio 1Xtra star Reece Parkinson has revealed he's quitting the show and going on a completely different career path.

The Radio DJ has been working on the Radio 1 spin-off station since 2016 and took to Twitter to announce the news.

He also hosted the Weekend Breakfast Show and 1Xtra Talks before getting the spin-off job.

Reece tweeted that he's leaving BBC Radio 1Xtra on March 27.

"I started as an intern at 21, then 2 years later, got my first on-air show," he said. "The past 7 years have been incredible. I would like to extend my gratitude to the management, staff, and of course, the amazing listeners.

"I'm so thankful for the guests I’ve been able to interview on the show, plus working alongside so many inspiring individuals.

"However, for some time now, I have known that I need to get curious again, just like when I was an intern."

Reece continued: "Through my own personal exploration & extensive research into how rapid our world is changing.

"I’ve been diving deep into exponential technological sectors. Particularly life sciences, which has strongly connected with me on a personal level since I got diagnosed with Type 1.

"I’m really proud to be shortly joining a world-class team working on scientific innovations, creating transformative medicines for people with serious diseases. It’s a really exciting time!"

The radio star concluded his message with: "Again, thanks to everyone that I’ve been lucky to work with at 1Xtra."

Friends and fans rushed to the comment section to congratulate the star on his impressive career move.

"Big congratulations on your new chapter bro," comedian Mo Gilligan said.

Clara Amfo wrote: "Massive salute Reece, you’re a [diamond emoji]," while Dermot O'Leary added: "Great shift buddy."

Singer Sam Tompkins said: "Thanks for giving me my first ever play on national radio, bro. Will never ever forget it. Good luck with everything! Super proud of you."

There will be a new afternoon shown taking over on weekdays from 1pm until 4pm.

It will be hosted by Kaylee Golding and will be broadcasted from Birmingham.
