When it comes to eating out, some diners order something new each and every time, while others stick to the same dishes to avoid disappointment. But one author claims those who have been ordering lobster either are only doing so to impress others in the restaurant, wanting them to believe you're well off.

Jason Pargin, an an American humour writer known by his former pen name David Wong, has divided opinions after sharing his thoughts on the seafood dish in a TikTok video. In the clip, which has already been viewed more than 400,000 times, Jason said: "I don't think anyone actually enjoys eating lobster, I think they've just been convinced that it's a high-class food for a really specific reason."

He goes on to explain how lobsters were originally used as a fertiliser in the United States, only being eaten by "poor people and prisoners".

But as they became harder to get hold of, the upper classes started to deem them a "luxury" food, which could be used to show off a person's wealth.

He added: "Because it was difficult to mess with and because it had to be shipped live inside the country, away from the coast, it became known that lobster was difficult to obtain.

"And because it's difficult to obtain, it had to be expensive, and because it was expensive, we decided it was good.

"You were eating lobster not because you enjoyed it but because you wanted it to be known to all who were watching you that you could afford lobster."

He ends his argument by claiming most people eat lobster alongside a "bucket of butter", saying everything taste good when dunked in butter, therefore it isn't something you'd enjoy on its own.

Commenting on his video, one user argued: "I actually really like lobster and crab, and almost never use the butter."

Another user added: "As a lobster fisherman who can basically eat as much lobster as I want, this is ridiculous. I can have buckets of it, and it is still delicious."

A third user said: "I don't understand, lobster is delicious."

However, others agreed with Jason, claiming it needs a sauce to disguise its actual flavour for it to be enjoyed.

One user said: "I think people who like lobster actually just really like melted butter."

Another user added: "I feel this way about alcohol. It can’t possibly taste good to people. It’s the mix they like and getting drunk."

One more user said: "There are a lot of examples where food isn't that great if you leave aside the exclusivity aspect."
