Antiques Roadshow guest cowers behind painting as staggering true cost disclosed
An Antiques Roadshow guest hid behind a famous painting in shock after finding out its real cost.
English painting expert Rupert Maas was presented with a landscape painting, said to be created by David Hockney, by a guest.
The painting, which was of a green landscape and multiple homes, was also signed by the iconic artist.
"We are sitting here all day and people bring pictures and the thing they want to know is, is it or isn't it by the artist they say it's by," the expert explained.
"This is not at all what I am used to seeing by David Hockney.

The guest brought in a David Hockney painting (BBC)David is an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 60s and is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.
The guest explained how he got his hands on the painting, revealing his grandfather "saw two young artists on the platform where they were signalling on a tiny station in Trimley St Mary between Felixstowe and Ipswich."
He added: "He noticed their equipment and invited them to show them around the signal box for a cup of tea.

The two artists went to lunch with the guest's grandfather and brought paintings with them. His grandfather ended up buying a piece of work from each of them.
"A year later, he brandish a piece of paper saying one of these guys had won a medal at the Royal College of Art," the guest said.
"So that is my case, that it is a Hockney."
The true cost was more than double (BBC)There was a cut-off signature on the edge of the painting and the guest admitted his mother trimmed the painting in order to get it to fit in a frame.
After some back and forth on the origins of the painting, Rupert confirmed the painting was indeed a Hockney piece - from his college days.

The guest guessed the painting was worth around £10,000 but was shocked to find out it could go for a lot more.
Rupert said it was worth between £20,000 to £30,000.
"£20,000 to £30,000?" The guest asked, gobsmacked, before quickly hiding his face behind the painting. "Thank you for that information."
