Tom Cruise decided to skip the 95th Academy Awards and instead spent the evening in an igloo, according to reports.

The actor's hit film Top Gun: Maverick had been nominated for a Best Picture award at last night's ceremony, but Tom was nowhere to be seen at the star-studded event.

Tom is said to have "known" the film would miss out on the Oscar and so decided to "get on with doing what he does best".

An insider has said the 60-year-old Hollywood icon flew out to Svalbard, 500 miles south of the North Pole, to film scenes for Mission Impossible's eighth instalment.

Tom is thought to have been joined by director Chris McQuarrie after turning down the chance to take a private jet to Hollywood in order to attend the Oscars.

"Tom just knows how these things play out – he'd rather get on with doing what he does best and making amazing movies that millions want to go and see than sit in an audience clapping and smiling for the cameras.

"He's seen it all before," the insider told The Sun.

Top Gun: Maverick had received six nominations at the Academy Awards, but went home with just one accolade for Best Sound.

Everything Everywhere All At Once beat Top Gun: Maverick to go home with the prestigious Best Picture Oscar.

There were some other big wins of the night, with both Brendan Fraser and Jamie Lee Curtis bagging their first honour from the Academy.

Lady Gaga and Rihanna both missed out on an Oscar, as Naatu Naatu from RRR won the award for Best Original Song, beating the two pop icons.

Michelle Yeoh was emotional as she picked up the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

She was up against tough competition with Cate Blanchett in Tár, Ana De Armas in Blonde, Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie and Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans.

Michelle's co-star Ke Huy Quan sobbed on stage as he received the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

The actor received a standing ovation as he took to the stage and hailed "the American dream".

"My mom is 84 years old and she is at home watching. Ma I just won an Oscar!" he said.

He continued: "My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage.

"They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe this is happening to me – this is the American dream."
