Police investigating the death of a missing dad whose body was found wrapped in a carpet have identified a person of interest.

Derrick Perkins is "needed for questioning" by officers after Nathan Millard, 42, went missing on a business trip in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, US, on February 23.

Mr Perkins, 42, is also wanted for probation violation, criminal damage to property three counts of access device fraud and unauthorised use of a vehicle.

The Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) said in a Facebook post on Friday: "Perkins is also needed for questioning in the Nathan Millard missing person case investigation. Perkins was last seen in the South Baton Rouge area driving a 2003 Toyota Camry."

However, he was found by a member of the public on March 6, at around 3:34 a.m in the 2900 block of Scenic Highway after a "stench" led a member of the public to the garage where his body had been dumped.

A man, identified only as Kieren, said the smell made him "feel sick" after he discovered his body three miles away north of Baton Rouge.

He told UWK: "'It smelled like something was bad or something was rotting. At first, I thought it was a dead animal, but I didn’t see anything.

"'At first I thought it was someone throwing out food, and then I saw the feet. That’s when I got really scared and my stomach was just turning in knots."

The Baton Rouge Police Department does not believe "foul play" is suspected.

According to police, Mr Millard died of an accidental overdose after he showed “no internal or external trauma” to the body.

Cops said: "There doesn’t appear to be any foul play at this point. I know that he was placed there obviously by another individual, we would like to know who and why.

"But just from the autopsy results that were given by the Coroner’s Office, at this time it doesn’t appear to be any signs of foul play."

However, there are still autopsy results to come back including a toxicology test.

Meanwhile, the cause and death of Nathan is still pending until the report is completed, according to officers.

Police are investigating how his body was left dumped behind a garage inside a carpet.

Investigators believe Mr Millard could have been with others when he potentially overdosed before his body was moved to a different location.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said: “It does appear that he was left there, that that’s most likely not where he died.

"I don’t want to go into details on our investigative efforts, but efforts are underway to locate and to talk to whoever may have put him there."

Police confirmed the investigation into Mr Millard's death is still ongoing.
