Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has hit back at the charges against his former club by admitting that he is “very sceptical’ and has ‘rolled his eyes’ at the accusations levelled against the reigning Premier League champions.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been charged by the Premier League with over 100 breaches of financial rules this week. A four-year investigation into the club’s finances has been ongoing with the findings now set to be handed over to an independent commission.

It remains to be seen what punishment would be dished out to City should they be found guilty with points deductions, with titles being retrospectively stripped and even relegation among the possibilities. After arriving in 2008, former Belgian international Kompany played a key role for the club in their new-found success.

He led the club to four Premier League titles, two FA Cup s and four League Cups. The vast majority of those successes are being scrutinised in a period between 2009 and 2018 having been investigated.

When asked for his response to the charges, the now Burnley boss was not left particularly convinced. Speaking after his side’s FA Cup victory over Ipswich on Tuesday evening, he said: "I look at it and sometimes roll my eyes a little bit.

"No doubt there's a lot of righteousness in the world to come and tell you what you've done wrong, and then if everybody looks at themselves, I think the football industry in general is not one that can afford to point the finger too many times.

"I think all of you will have a little bit of a smile on your face to know what the football industry is about. I'm very sceptical when people start pointing fingers. Do the best for yourself and let's try and improve all the time but I'm a little bit sceptical when the fingers get pointed easily."

Kompany was a Man City player for a decade following his arrival from Hamburg and went on to become a legendary figure with the club. He made a total of 360 appearances for the club.

His most memorable goal arguably came against Leicester in 2019 to all-but secure another Premier League crown - albeit this one is not currently under investigation. The centre-back's contribution to City saw a statue erected outside of the Etihad Stadium alongside fellow club icons Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

He left to rejoin boyhood club Anderlecht at the end of that season, going on to manage the Belgian side before moving to Burnley. Kompany is currently on track to lead the Clarets back into the Premier League at the first time of asking. His side sit seven points clear at the top of the Championship after an electric first-half of the season that has seen them lose just two games.
