The UK Defence Secretary's stark warning that "war is coming" to the UK within the next seven years left many Mirror readers aghast - with most saying they did not want our nation getting involved in another conflict.

Last month, Ben Wallace announced that Vladimir Putin is "not going to stop", before adding "conflict is coming by the end of this decade, whether it is a cold war or hot, war is coming".

Mr Wallace was lobbying for increased defence spending in Jeremy Hunt's budget later this month, saying that the world is "more dangerous, more unstable and more insecure" since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The MP wants Rishi Sunak’s government to recognise and prepare for impending danger, stating "we need a greater proportion of the public spend on defence."

Responding to our poll 'Are YOU worried about nation becoming involved in another conflict?', 910 Mirror readers answered yes, with 311 saying no.

And the accompanying story was flooded with comments, a sample of which you can read below.

In February, the UK Defence Secretary told LBC that he expects the Ukraine war to still be going on this time next year.

"I think Russia has shown a complete disregard, not only for the lives of the people of Ukraine, but for its own soldiers," he says.

"We are sitting here 12 months in and 188,000, actually more now, Russian soldiers are dead or injured as a result of this catastrophic miscalculation and aggression by President Putin.

"When someone has crossed the line and thinks it is OK to do that to your own people, running effectively a meat grinder for an army, I think he is not going to stop."

Here's a selection of just some of the comments left on our story:

'The war in Ukraine is nothing to do with us, so we should keep out of it'

Micro12345: "I’m not worried about the British Army, they are professionals. What I am worried about is the British public and society who have no clue what war is about or experienced it. They will not cope. Saying this, I hope we never experience it."

Rupert Marks: "Helping Ukraine with military equipment and training is one thing, but the war in Ukraine is nothing to do with us, so we should keep out of it, and not have ten years' of casualties from our beleaguered troops. We cannot have Afghanistan Mark Two."

Asoundviewpoint: "The issue is the independence of countries surrounding Russia, due to one man's insecurity.

"The ignoring of NATO membership issues on Russia's doorstep was a big error in judgement, despite the warnings issued by Putin some time ago."

Lynnmarieoct: "They should get Putin under control to stop things escalating. He is the biggest bully here, thinking he can control everything to the point of mass destruction. We need to keep together on things here to support our country and our neighbours though this traumatic situation. We need to work together as best as possible in whatever way we can."

Gesandangela1: "I don't think anyone will be worried for long as Russia couldn't beat a combined Europe; so he could only push the button. And shortly after that the world will be finished and he will be locked in his bunker with a few allies, but he will never see the sky again!"

RedJock: "War is not a game. I'm worried about my son, nephews and friends who would be sent to fight."

DMGnasher: "What I'm afraid of is the likes of Ben Wallace walking us into a war with Russia/China that the people of the world don't want."

Hengist: "Anyone with an ounce of sense should be terrified by the prospects of a pan-European War, not least because it would most likely end in a nuclear war.

"All the signs point to relentless escalation. The Germans began by sending just helmets to the Ukraine, now they have sent self-propelled howitzers, and have been conned into sending Leopard tanks.

"Meanwhile, The Doomsday Clock stands at 90 seconds before 'nuclear midnight' — the shortest time since 'the clock' was started in the late 1940s."
