Cara Delevingne told how her struggles with substance abuse started at the young age of seven years old.

The supermodel worried friends and fans when she was pictured looking dishevelled just after her 30th birthday.

The star, who rose to fame as the 18-year-old schoolgirl and face of Burberry in 2001, recently sat down with Vogue to open up about her childhood.

"I woke up in my granny's house in my bedroom with a hangover, in a bridesmaid's dress. I'd gone around nailing glasses of Champagne," she explained.

When she was 10 years old, she was prescribed sleeping pills to manage her insomnia. She was also diagnosed with dyspraxia - a condition which affects coordination.

At 15, she suffered a breakdown and was soon prescribed antidepressants which "saved her life".

"I hadn’t uncovered the f**king hole inside, the real whirlpool within. And I still think there’s a part of diagnosis and labelling that is damaging. There were so many times that I was encouraged to take this or be put on that."

The Carnival Row actress, who is four months sober and counting, said she used to self-harm by hitting her head against a tree in order to try to 'knock herself out'.

At her lowest point, she contemplated taking her own life.

Cara previously revealed her mother's heroin addiction made her childhood "very stressful", telling Harper's Bazaar : "Everyone has something they go through with their family.

"My life I feel was very stressful, because there was quite a lot of chaos, not being sure if people were okay or not."

Months after the pictures of her at the airport in LA were released, Cara made a return to red-carpet events looking fresh.

She even made her return to the catwalk for Rihanna's fourth instalment of her Fenty fashion show.
