Police in Mallorca have arrested a man described as a 26-year-old British national on suspicion of raping a woman at a hotel.

The man repeatedly resisted arrest and headbutted one of the officers who was called to the scene.

The alleged rape happened inside a room at a hotel in the popular resort of Santa Ponsa near Magaluf.

A friend of the alleged victim alerted a receptionist who called the police, around 7pm on Friday.

The friend told officers the man had also tried to force her into the room.

The Civil Guard, which made the arrest, could not be reached early on Sunday morning for comment.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect has already appeared in court and whether he has been remanded in custody or released on bail pending an ongoing investigation.

The nationality of the woman allegedly raped has not been revealed.

In July last year, a British tourist was arrested on suspicion of rape in the same party resort.

Police were alerted by a female UK holidaymaker who allegedly met the man in the Punta Ballena area - also known as 'The Strip.'

She then blacked out in his hotel room and woke up hours later to find him “on top of her”, according to reports from the local paper Ultima Hora.

The unnamed detainee was held after detectives went to the hotel with a description the woman had given them.

He was held in police custody before appearing in court where a judge agreed to release him pending an ongoing inquiry.
