A burglar has dodged jail for his 56th raid, despite having 261 previous convictions for a host of crimes.

A sex attacker with 203 previous offences has also kept their liberty.

They were among nine serial offenders handed suspended sentences or community orders instead of jail time in 2021, the most recent figures available.

Another violent crook avoided being sent to prison despite having 304 convictions. And a paedophile sentenced for the fifth time for internet child sex image offences was let off despite 21 previous convictions.

Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Alistair Carmichael said: “For all their talk about being tough on crime, the Tories have failed.

“Few people are lucky enough to get the police to investigate their crime, fewer still see anyone charged – and the handful who do see offenders given sentences that are too light.”

David Spencer, from the Centre for Crime Prevention, added: “It is scandalous that these dangerous criminals dodge jail. Sentencing guidelines need to be changed.”

The Ministry of Justice would not identify the felons because it would breach their rights.

A spokesman said: “While sentencing is a matter for independent judges, these figures predate our new tougher punishments for most serious offenders.”
