Woman branded 'selfish' for not paying sister-in-law's £800 hen party bill

A woman is seething after being asked to pay the £800 bill for her sister-in-law's hen party- but her refusal left the bride-to-be calling her "selfish."

The soon-to-be married relative just wanted a nice dinner for the hen do, so eight of them went to a fancy restaurant in town and all was going well, until the bill arrived.

The woman was confused when she was handed the bill, and was told by her sister-in-law that she and her parents thought it would be good for her to pay for the whole thing as a "wedding gift" – but she was not happy with the move.

In the Reddit post, the woman added that she refused and couldn't believe that she had not been consulted about this before the £800 bill arrived.

"At the end of dinner the bill comes out and the waiter hands it to me," wrote the woman, who remained anonymous.

'I'm spending £20k on a new bathroom - but won't help my brother out with cash'

She continued: "I'm sitting there confused for a second until sister-in-law speaks up and is all 'my parents and I were talking and were thinking you and my brother can handle the bill for this, as a wedding gift, since you're not financially contributing to my wedding'. I stared at her shocked for a moment and then was like 'and you didn't think to bring this up to me before hand?'."

The sister-in-law told the other guests that the woman and her husband are wealthy so it should not be that big a problem for them.

"I told her 'well sorry but I'm not your parents, don't expect hand outs from me'. She called me selfish and I called her an entitled brat, paid for my half of the bill and left," she wrote in the forum post.

Since the incident, the woman has been told by members of the family to apologise- which she has flatly refused.

In response, many have sided with the woman and said the bride-to-be was acting unreasonably.

One person wrote: "Don't apologise. No matter how much money you make."

While another stated: "I would have paid and then seethed over it, wishing I'd handled it just like you."

A third penned: "Yep, this was 100% an attempt to spring this on you on the assumption she would be too embarrassed to argue it in front of other people."
