A fire broke out at Royal Gwent Hospital this morning with staff and patients evacuated from the site.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the hospital in Newport, Wales, at around 8.30am after a blaze erupted at the outpatient department.

Fire crews have since left the site and the building has been secured, said Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Appointments at the outpatient department were initially cancelled, but will now be running as planned from 11am onwards.

All staff and inpatients are safe, the NHS health board added.

In a statement shared on Twitter at around 9.25am, it wrote: "We are currently dealing with a fire at the Royal Gwent Hospital Outpatients Department.

"The department has been evacuated and the South Wales Fire and Rescue service are on scene.

"All outpatient appointments have been cancelled for today and all inpatients and staff are safe."

In an update one hour later, the health board confirmed that the situation was back under control.

It tweeted: "South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have now left the Royal Gwent Hospital site and the building has been made secure.

"Anyone with an appointment from 11am onwards today can attend their appointment as these will be running as planned. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The health board added in a further tweet: "Thank you for everyone's co-operation and to our staff and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for their quick response."

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Services told the Mirror: "At approximately 8:27am on Wednesday 25 January 2023, we received reports of a fire at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

"Crews from Maindee, Duffryn and Cwmbran Stations attended the scene and assisted in the evacuation of the Outpatients block.

"Crews worked alongside onsite engineers and utilised specialist equipment to locate and extinguish the fire, including thermal imaging cameras, respirators and a CO2 extinguisher.

"The area has now been secured and a stop message was received at approximately 9:53am."
