Anne Heche's son Atlas has spoken publicly about his mum's death for the first time since the car crash that killed her almost six months ago.

The 14-year-old, whom the actress shared with ex James Tupper, described her as "the brightest person I've ever known".

In a heartbreaking statement, the teen reflected on his mum's death on August 5. He opened up on how much he's missing the Donnie Brasco actress, while his dad James also paid tribute to his former partner.

"She always knew how to solve a problem, or help a friend," Atlas said. "She always knew the right thing to do. I cannot put into words how grateful I am or how much I miss her."

Also speaking to the Los Angeles Inquisitor magazine, James added: "Anne and I were together for more than a decade, we have a beautiful son together and in that time, she was the very definition of light in our lives, always bringing fun, love and energy.

"She will always be remembered in our hearts and minds."

The words are the first time Atlas has publicly mentioned his mum since the fatal accident. However, his half-brother, Homer Heche Laffoon, 20, released a statement via his rep on behalf of himself and Atlas weeks after the tragedy.

Homer has since been been granted control of his late mother's estate, despite objections from the actress' former partner James Tupper.

He was appointed as permanent administrator of the estate, marking the end of his bitter battle with the 57-year-old actor.

Last month, the autopsy report revealed Anne had drugs including cocaine in her system at the time of the crash.

The report showed there were traces of cocaine and fentanyl in the actress' body. However, the fentanyl detected in her urine has been determined to have been administered in the hospital while she was being treated for pain.

The cocaine was said to have been detected in the 53-year-old's blood after investigators had took a sample following the crash.

TMZ reported at the time that no alcohol found in the Emmy-award winning actress' body. The finding comes after an image moments before the crash had shown a bottle of some sort in the front of her car.
