Iraqi lawmaker Mohammed Farman Shaher jailed for seven years over illicit enrichment

An Iraqi court has sentenced sitting lawmaker Mohammed Farman Shaher to seven years in prison for illicit enrichment, ordering him to pay the equivalent of over $21.4 million in restitution and fines, according to legal authorities.

Shaher was ordered to repay 11.8 billion Iraqi dinars ($9.01 million) and $1.73 million in illicit gains, alongside an equivalent fine.

Shaher, who was arrested on June 28, serves on parliament’s Oil and Gas Committee. He is a member of the Sunni Taqaddum Party, led by former parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and home to current speaker Haibat al-Halbousi.
