A car with a two-year-old child inside was stolen and later abandoned and recovered, as police search for the thief.

The grey Volvo was taken from Long Thorpe Lane in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, at approximately 8:30 pm on Wednesday.

According to police, the parents of the child were nearby when the car was stolen.

It was later abandoned with the child still inside after the suspect allegedly left the area.

Police found the vehicle near Woodlesford Lock in Leeds within 15 minutes of the reported theft.

The young child was found in the car and cared for by responding officers.

The keys to the vehicle were left in the ignition by the suspect when they abandoned it.

West Yorkshire Police stated no arrests have been made and investigations into the alarming incident are ongoing.

The force added: “Officers received reports of a stolen car at around 8:30 pm last night (5 August).

“The car was stolen from Long Thorpe Lane, Wakefield, and a child was in the car.

“Within approximately fifteen minutes of the report, the police recovered the car near Woodlesford Lock, Leeds, and the child was returned to their family safely.

“Investigations are currently ongoing.”
