Part of Aberdeen beach closed after sea barrier collapses
Aberdeen beach has been partially closed after a man-made sea barrier collapsed.
The council has confirmed that the most northern groyne, which is built to interrupt water flow and limit the movement of sediment, has failed just south of the River Don.
The lower esplanade can be accessed from the south up to the “Windows to the Sea” sculpture and from the north via the cross ramp.
The beach cannot be accessed via the coastal paths north of the barrier.
An image of the affected structure appears to show that it has buckled during a high tide.
Due to the vehicles on the beach and lower esplanade, members of the public have been urged to avoid the area.
Works in the area, which the local authority says is “in the interest of public safety”, are expected to last a week.
The rest of the beach remains open.
