Brother of late Love Island host Caroline Flack dies aged 55

Caroline Flack’s brother has died six years after the former Love Island host took her own life.

Paul Flack, 55, was found unresponsive at his Sandringham Road home in Norwich on June 21 before later dying at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

A provisional post-mortem has given the cause of death as cardiac arrest due to hanging.

An inquest into his death, which came just three days after his 55th birthday, was opened at Norfolk Coroner’s Court on Monday.

Coroner Yvonne Blake said further enquiries would be required before the circumstances surrounding his death can be fully established.

The brief hearing was adjourned until October 23 while evidence continues to be gathered.

Mr Flack, an artist and graphic designer, is survived by his partner and two children.

Following Caroline’s death in 2020, Mr Flack posted a childhood photograph of his beloved sister on Instagram.

In what is now his final post on his Instagram account, he wrote: ‘This will be my last post here. May those who know feel shame for eternity. Love you Caroline.’

Mr Flack appeared alongside his mother Christine and sister Elizabeth in the 2021 documentary Caroline Flack: Her Life and Death.

He said how Caroline was the first thing on their minds when they woke up in the morning, as they gathered around her memorial bench.

His death was first reported by the Eastern Daily Press, which is where Christine had worked for several years.

Caroline, who rose to fame as TV presenter on The X Factor, triumphed on Strictly Come Dancing and won a Bafta in 2018 for hosting Love Island.

On February 15, 2020, she took her own life at the age of 40 after learning that she would face trial for the alleged assault of her boyfriend, Lewis Burton.

An inquest ruled that the fear of the impending prosecution and the overwhelming glare of press and public scrutiny were catalysts for her suicide.

The TV star was arrested and charged with assault by beating following a domestic incident at her flat in London in December 2019.

Initially, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) considered a caution, but the Metropolitan Police appealed the decision, ensuring that it went to court.

Caroline’s impending trial then triggered an intense wave of tabloid press articles and social media attention, which led her family and friends to note that she was in a very dark place.

The coroner concluded that Caroline died by suicide from hanging.

Since her death, her mother, Christine, has publicly blamed the police and prosecutors for pushing the trial.
