Russian oil-linked businessman bids for UK golf club near critical defence infrastructure
In the UK, Russian businessman Yuri Shamara attempted to purchase a golf course located next to a railway line that serves Britain’s main shipyard for building nuclear attack submarines. This was reported by Financial Times.
The situation has drawn attention to a broader problem: the activity of Russian investors near critical infrastructure in Europe.
The Russian’s wealth is linked to the Ilskyi oil refinery, which, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, became an important source of fuel for the Russian army.
The agreement has caused concern in the British government and the Ministry of Defence.
Yuriy Shamara’s lawyer stated that his client "was unaware of the club’s geographical proximity to defense facilities" and did not realize the significance of this railway line. According to him, the businessman simply wanted to financially support a local club in trouble.
At the end of March, two weeks before the vote, his daughter Anastasia was officially named as the buyer. The total offer amounted to 800,000 pounds.
According to a journalistic investigation, Shamara is linked to companies involved in schemes to transport Russian oil in circumvention of sanctions.
