Three dead after bus ploughs into crowd at Stockholm bus stop

Several people have been killed and others severely injured after a bus ploughed into a bus shelter in the Östermalm district of central Stockholm, Swedish police confirmed. Emergency calls began at 3:24 pm local time, prompting a large response from rescue services and city crisis teams.

Police reported that three people have died, while three others were taken to hospital, two by ambulance and one by other means. Authorities have not disclosed the ages or identities of the victims, citing the ongoing investigation.

A crisis support centre was opened, staffed by workers from the City of Stockholm, the Red Cross and the church. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but police have confirmed that the bus driver has been arrested.

A witness told Expressen newspaper that the bus "mowed down an entire bus stop queue", describing scenes of panic as people screamed and rushed to help the injured. She added that "there must have been more people under the bus."
