It might not be the first thing on everyone's list when they visit the Lake District, but a quiet village has become an unexpected hit for staycationers looking for a bit of peace and quiet.

The tiny village of Bassenthwaite only has a population of 500, as well as just a single pub and no shops within the village itself.

Nonetheless, the small community has become a hit after it was named the most peaceful place in the UK for people to go on holiday.

Bassenthwaite has come top of a list of more than fifty different locations which were assessed on population, walking, fishing, bird watching, and crime.

The village also only had a very small number of Instagram hashtags, counting only 100 on the social media platform which led it to be listed as a hidden gem on the platform.

All this was combined together to create a 'peace score' for each destination, which then ranked them.

The list was compiled by CBD retailer Ice Head Shop, and saw Bassenthwaite given the top spot, with a peace score of 86.62.

This may be less of a surprise after taking into account the incredible scenery which surrounds the tiny village.

Nearby landmarks include the imposing Skiddaw.

Skiddaw is the sixth highest mountain in England, rising to just over 3,000ft tall.

There is also the nearby Bassenthwaite lake, which is itself very impressive at four miles long.

Combined, this means that there are more than 39 hiking trails within the vicinity of the tiny village.

Nonetheless, one factor which is a surprise is the crime rate, which is listed as 63 per thousand inhabitants.

Runners up in the list were Dartmouth in Devon in second place, while the small village of Over Haddon in the Peak District in Derbyshire came in third place.
