A major fire has broken out at a scrap metal yard in Leicester, sending a huge plume of thick smoke billowing across the city skyline. Emergency services are at the scene, with residents urged to keep doors and windows shut for their own safety - and to avoid drinking water from their taps.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that eight fire engines and several specialist appliances are tackling the blaze at a recycling and scrap metal site on Ulverscroft Road. Crews were called earlier this afternoon and remain in attendance as the fire continues to rage.

The towering column of smoke can be seen for miles, prompting calls from officials for people living nearby to stay indoors and avoid the area.
