World's 'worst' McDonald's that saw 800 police call outs in 1 year finally shuts

A McDonald's restaurant which was responsible for 800 police call outs in one year alone has seen its doors shut for good.

The branch dubbed the 'worst in the world' will close down after nearly 40 years of service, it has been announced.

Police have responded to hundreds of call outs at the eatery in Ottawa, Canada - including one involving a racoon.

But the force won't be returning after the closure was confirmed.

Bosses say the decision was down to lease issues and not the weekly punch-ups damaging its reputation.

The branch, which opened in 1985, went viral back in 2013 after a huge brawl that saw dozens of customers trade blows.

One lout then pulled out a raccoon from his jacket as the video went around the world. Another violent clip also hit the headlines in 2015.

Since then things have got even worse and Police Chief Charles Bordeleau raised concerns about the location in a letter to President and CEO of McDonald's Canada.

It referenced the "ongoing criminal activity and social disorder" of the location.

That saw the restaurant's opening hours reduced from from 24-hours to 6am to 10pm, but now it will be closed for good.

Commenting on the decision to shut the doors for good, building owner Peter Crosthwaite says the decision wasn't just down to violence.

"The city tore up Rideau Street and put the subway in, then they re-tore it to enhance it, put curbing in," Crosthwaite said.

"The freedom rallies and we had Covid; all these things are upheavals that can’t make it easy for a steady, reliable operation.

"They are a pretty dynamic organisation, they have the right to look at different spots and maybe they felt the time was right. But there’s maybe things that made it seem more right than usual."

He told the Ottawa Citizen says he hasn't been told why the lease hasn't been extended.

“They’ve been a great tenant for almost 50 years," he told the publication. "They’re smart people. Maybe it was time for a change - maybe they didn’t feel comfortable.

“McDonald’s doesn’t tell us why they make their decisions, that’s for sure, but they’re super smart people.

"After 40 years, maybe it’s a nice thing to put a new face on the building. It sort of makes it a little more dynamic and exciting to the public when they see something new."

The branch's days are numbers after he confirmed the location soon being vacated by McDonald’s had already had expressions of interest for the 4,561-square-feet space.
