Brian Wilson has paid a moving tribute to David Crosby following the death of the singer.

Crosby, Stills and Nash singer-songwriter-guitarist David died at the age of 81 after a "long illness" his wife Jan announced on Thursday evening.

She released a statement to Variety, which said: "It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away.

"He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us.

"His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly."

She went on to ask for privacy as the family grieved their loss.

Following the news, many famous faces and fans took to social media to express their sadness, including The Beach Boys star Brian.

Writing an emotional message on Twitter, the musician, 80, said: "I don’t know what to say other than I’m heartbroken to hear about David Crosby. David was an unbelievable talent - such a great singer and songwriter. And a wonderful person.

"I just am at a loss for words. Love & Mercy to David’s family and friends. Love, Brian."

His words were met with an influx of similar messages in the comments section of his post. One user added: "Totally agree. I think his music grew and grew as he got older too. Recent stuff was amazing. Such a shame."

Another said: "Such sad news....his beautiful tenor voice is on some of my favourite songs of all time. RIP."

David was a singer and guitarist for The Byrds between 1964 and 1967 alongside Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke.

He later went on to form Crosby, Stills & Nash with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. His last solo recording came in 2014.

He is survived by his wife Jan Dance, their sons Django, James Raymond, and two daughters, Erika and Donovan, from previous relationships.
