Ireland has recorded 47 homicides so far in 2024

Four gun killings occurred – two on each side of the border.

A Mirror analysis shows that, as of last night, 47 homicides have occurred in Ireland so far in 2024.

That is an increase of seven on last year’s figure of 40 – or a hike of 17.5 per cent. Of the 47, 30 died in the State and 17 in the North, which is a percentage split of 64/36.

Four gun killings occurred – two on each side of the border. That is an increase of one on last year’s figure. The gun deaths represent 8.5 per cent of the total. There were 22 assaults – nearly 47 per cent – and 16 stabbings, 34 per cent.

Two per cent, one death, was a case of vehicular homicide and another four, or over eight per cent, had other causes of death. Thirty-four victims, or over 72 per cent, of victims were male and 13 were female, or nearly 28 per cent.

Charges have been laid in most cases. Someone was charged in 39, or 83 per cent, of cases. Only eight, or 17 per cent, have no charges to date.

A small number of cases either side of the border occurred when people died after alleged assaults and they are not included in our statistics. That is because in each case the accused has not been charged with murder or manslaughter.

The statistics also do not include the case of young Kyran Durnin. The Drogheda, Co Louth, child was six when he was last seen in 2022, but the case was only upgraded to murder in October 2024. But gardai believe he died in 2022.

Dublin, Ireland’s most populated county, had 11 deaths, while Antrim – which includes most of Belfast – had seven.

Cork and Down had four deaths while Derry, Kildare and Down had three each. Carlow, Tyrone and Wexford had two each. And counties Louth, Armagh, Tipperary, Laois, Mayo and Waterford had one death each.
