UK imposes record sanctions to cripple Russia’s war effort

Britain has sanctioned 30 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet in its largest-ever crackdown, cutting off oil revenues that fund the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine.

The United Kingdom has unveiled its largest sanctions package against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” targeting 30 vessels that have been used for transporting billions of dollars worth of oil and oil products in the last year alone, allowing the Kremlin to fund the war in Ukraine.

This move brings the total number of Russian tankers sanctioned by the U.K. to 73, the highest of any nation. The sanctions also extend to insurance companies supporting these vessels, which creates additional financial and operational hurdles for Russia’s shipping network.

Speaking at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Italy, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed the importance of cutting off Moscow’s revenue streams. “Russia’s oil revenues are fueling the fires of war and destruction in Ukraine,” Lammy said, urging allies to join Britain in intensifying pressure on the Kremlin.

British officials say these measures are designed to degrade Russia’s military capabilities, disrupt global trade operations, and reduce risks associated with unsafe shipping and oil spills.

Through these actions, Britain continues to lead efforts to weaken the Kremlin’s war machine and uphold global security, officials said.
