Police and paramedic crews attended the horror crash on the A737 involving a vehicle and van that sadly resulted in the death of a 59-year-old woman who was a passenger in a Mercedes

A woman and four horses have died following a horror crash on the A737 in Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Paramedics raced to the site of the crash at about 3:10am today following reports of a crash involving a Mercedes and a MAN box van. Several calls were made at the time that reported six horses had gotten loose following the crash.

Officers and paramedics arrived but were unable to save a 59-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Mercedes. Four of the horses were killed following the crash after they were struck by vehicles along the carriageway and two were taken to safety.

A 52-year-old man - who was behind the wheel of the car - was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. A 33-year-old man who was a passenger in the car and a 59-year-old man who was driving the van were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for assessment.

The long stretch of road was closed for about 10 hours while investigators assessed the scene, GlasgowLive reported. Road Policing Officers have since appealed for information as they continue their investigation.

Sergeant Jack Swindells said: “We are providing support to the family of the woman who died as our enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of this crash.

“We would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A737 on Monday morning around the time of the crash who either witnessed the crash take place or seen the horses running on the road. Anyone with dash-cam footage is also asked to please contact us as soon as possible.
