A suspected gang of burglars have been arrested over a spate of burglaries in Ibiza - including on the home of radio DJ Nick Grimshaw

Police have arrested a suspected gang of burglars who reportedly pumped sedative gas into homes in Ibiza - including that of DJ Nick Grimshaw.

The spate of crimes hit the Spanish party island in which knockout gas is said to have been used on upmarket properties. Spanish detectives made the shock admission that gas may have been used this weekend as they released details of 22 raids carried out in connection.

Celeb DJ Nick Grimshaw was among those targeted after a villa he rented for his 40th birthday where he was staying with his 81-year-old mother Eileen and his fiancé Meshach Henry was hit, with the criminals believed to have used sedative gas while they were in the property. The gas, thought to have been used to incapacitate victims, left people waking up dizzy and vomiting, police said.

Spanish police released bodycam footage of the Guardia Civil arrests and even CCTV of hooded burglars carrying out their raids. Pictures showed a stash of luxury designer items, cash and laptops seized in the raids, with the bounty of stolen goods amounting to more than half a million euros.

A Civil Guard spokesperson said: "The Civil Guard has arrested three people belonging to a gang specialising in committing robberies in luxury properties on the island of Ibiza during the summer. They have been linked to at least 22 crimes with the total value of the items stolen exceeding half a million euros.

"The intruders entered the properties while the occupants were sleeping, always dressed in black and hiding their faces. If they were caught during the break-in, they fled the scene. Many of the victims told police they felt dazed when they woke up, as well as feeling discomfort with dizziness and vomiting, leading detectives to suspect the criminals were using some sort of gas that caused sleepiness.

"During the investigation detectives in Ibiza were able to track down the homes of the suspects thanks to the localisation of vehicles they were using to commit the crimes, vehicles which had previously been stolen." The gang may have been operating as early as 2019, police suspect.

The spokesperson added: "This week a property was searched and several objects related to the robberies which had been reported missing, including designer watches, sunglasses, designer bags, mobiles and cash, were found. Officers also seized clothes the suspects used to perpetrate the crimes.

"The three people arrested are two men and a woman. They have already appeared before a judge in court and two of them have been remanded in custody and continue to be investigated for at least 22 robberies and thefts inside houses. The total amount of the items stolen has been estimated at around EUROS 548,500. Police information points to the gang being in Ibiza since 2019."

Nick Grimshaw spent time on the party island in July and August this year, where he was pictured partying with pals. He posted a picture to his 1.3million Instagram followers on August 14 of him on a chair against the recognisable Spanish backdrop, captioned "waking up at 40".
