A body has been found in the search for a British teenager who disappeared during a swim near a beach in the Netherlands.

The 19-year-old girl was with three friends, who were all rescued in the North Sea near the Zuidelijk Havenhoofd, at 8.30pm on Sunday.

Police confirmed that the remains of the victim were discovered in the late hours of last night.

A statement said: ‘Last night we found a deceased person at Zuidelijk Havenhoofd in Scheveningen . It concerns the 19-year-old British woman who went missing at sea on Sunday.’

All four of them, including the missing girl, are around the same age and are from the UK.

Rescuers, who searched for two hours until it became too dark to see, had already said there is little hope that she will be found alive.

Her three friends attempted to rescue her, but they got into difficulty in the water.

An eyewitness said two of the boys had injuries to the legs and were covered in blood.

Their injuries were caused by being swept out against the rocky peer that forms the harbour.

An older woman who is reportedly the mother of one of the children was ‘panicking and screaming’ at the scene.

The eyewitness told Omroep West: ‘They both had legs covered in blood. There was also a mother there who was p

‘The water was so wild, really impassable. Those boys barely survived.’

The search was being carried out by boat and helicopter and is now reduced to checking the shoreline in the hopes of finding her body.

Teams were also seen wading through the water with flashlights in search of the girl.

A crane was also used to look through the sea and around the rocks and a barricade was set up blocking access to the pier to ensure rescue teams could carry out a search.
