England reveal new interim manager to replace Gareth Southgate for next matches
England have confirmed that Lee Carsley will take charge on an interim basis as they search for a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate, who left his role last month
The Football Association have confirmed that Lee Carsley has been installed as the new England head coach on an interim basis.
The current England Under-21 boss was tipped to step in temporarily after Gareth Southgate announced he was quitting following last month’s agonising loss in the Euro 2024 final.
And The FA have now confirmed in a statement that Carsley will take the reins - for now. Speaking on Friday, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level.
“He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”
Carsley said in response to the news: “It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
Carsley, 50, has previously held coaching roles at Coventry City, Sheffield United, Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City.
He is highly regarded by the FA and led England’s U21 team to European Championship glory last year - their first triumph in the competition since 1984.
Carsley will take charge of the upcoming fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month as England prepare to kick off the new UEFA Nations League campaign.
A host of high-profile names have been linked with the England role since Southgate confirmed that the 2-1 loss against Spain at Euro 2024 last month would be his final match at the helm.
The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter are both unattached and have been linked with the role, while Carsley is also believed to be in contention to land the job on a permanent basis.
