Team GB confirm Adam Peaty’s Paris Olympics fate after swimmer caught Covid-19

Adam Peaty tested positive for Covid shortly after winning silver in his breaststroke final which has put his involvement in the mixed 4x100m medley relays in doubt

Adam Peaty will miss out on the mixed 4x100m medley relays having tested for Covid whilst in Paris.

The Brit narrowly missed out on another Olympic gold - instead claiming silver - when he took part in the breaststroke final earlier this week. His participation in Friday’s event was in doubt and the swimmer has been unable to recover in time.

Even though Peaty misses the heats it does not rule him out for good and Peaty could come in for the final on Saturday evening, should Team GB qualify. He could also compete in the men’s 4x100m medley relay which begins on Saturday provided he’s fit enough and the coaches want him to feature.

James Wilby, who was 11th-fastest in the 100m breaststroke semi-finals and missed out on the final, will take on the breaststroke leg in Peaty’s absence with Kathleen Dawson, Joe Litchfield and Anna Hopkin making up the quartet.

Following his positive Covid test, Peaty said: "I’ll now be focusing on a fast, full recovery to give my best in the team relays later in the week. I’ve had so many messages and I’ll get back to you all, thank you for your support as it has truly been an unforgettable journey."

The British Olympic Association (BOA) released a statement which read: “Adam Peaty began feeling unwell on Sunday, ahead of his men’s 100m breaststroke final. In the hours after the final, his symptoms became worse and he was tested for Covid early on Monday morning. He tested positive at that point.

“He is hopeful to be back in competition for the relay events later in the swimming programme. As in any case of illness, the situation is being managed appropriately, with all usual precautions being taken to keep the wider delegation healthy.”
