A man has been arrested after an outbreak of violence at a local football match in Sussex saw a young man sustain serious injuries.

Police investigating the incident have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Officers said that a 24-year-old man was assaulted during the first half of a football match in Lancing, West Sussex last Saturday.

The attack caused disruption to the game as an ambulance was called to the scene at the Croshaw Recreational Ground.

The young victim was left with serious facial injuries and was taken to hospital, where he was still receiving treatment on Saturday night.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that the arrested man had been interviewed about the attack.

He has now been released on bail until April 20.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate the incident.

Crime investigator Neil Carter said in a statement: "We are looking to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault on Saturday afternoon or anyone who may have been filming the football match.

"We understand there were a number of people present and we are asking them to come forward to help us with our investigation."

Officers have urged witnesses or anyone who has video footage that could assist police to report it online or call 101 quoting serial 835 of 28/01.
