An infamous gangster known as ‘big Viking Stomper’ has been caught after escaping prison in late May.

Daniel Gee, 44, was filmed smiling as he was arrested by Merseyside Police in Kirkless Hall Inn in Aspull, Wigan.

He was first reported missing on May 27 after disappearing from category D prison Kirklevington Grange in rural North Yorkshire.

In October 2009 he was found guilty of two cases of threats to kill and blackmail.

He was planning to arm himself after Jamie Starkey, 16, shot him in the stomach and lung – but Gee had refused medical treatment after.

Gee made numerous threats after, but the jury were unable to reach a verdict on conspiracy to murder and possession of firearms.

He was handed a rare indefinite sentence for public protection in 2010.

Gee became notorious after flooding Liverpool’s Grizedale estate with drugs.

Judge Henry Globe KC said at the time of his sentencing: ‘I am in no doubt that the public must be protected from you in the future.

‘I really do not know when it will be safe to release you.’

Police said Gee is in custody and will be returned to prison soon.
