A train has derailed blocking all lines at Wigan station in Greater Manchester with engineers rushing to the scene.

National Rail has confirmed that the train has come off the track at Wigan North Western station this afternoon with Northern and TransPennine Express routes currently affected meaning that journeys may be cancelled, revised or delayed until at least 6pm today. Engineers have gone to the scene and are assessing the situation, added the rail company.

The routes affect includes the Northern route between Blackpool North/Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street, and also between Barrow-in-Furness/Windermere and Manchester Airport. Also affected is the TransPennine Express route between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, a freight train has derailed at Wigan North Western and all services remain at a standstill. National Rail said that replacement road transport is being offered on certain routes. It stated: "A freight train has derailed in the Wigan North Western area, blocking the lines between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central. As a result, trains may be cancelled or revised. This is expected until 18:00."

People maybe entitled to compensation if they face delays in completing their journey, added National Rail, while advising people to keep a check on their online ’journey planner’ for updates.

Here is the advice for Northern passengers, on the National Rail website: "All stations between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central will not be served. Northern ticket holders travelling from Wigan North Western towards Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services from Wigan Wallgate to either Headbolt Lane or Southport and board Merseyrail services to Liverpool Lime Street.

"Northern ticket holders travelling from Blackpool North towards Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services to Preston and change for alternative services towards Ormskirk where onward connections with Merseyrail services are available to Liverpool Lime Street.

"All ticket restrictions have been lifted during this disruption to allow customers to complete their journey. Replacement road transport has been requested to operate between Wigan North Western - St Helens Central in both directions. Further information will be posted once operators have been sourced and departure times confirmed."
